Last updated: May 7, 2026. Festival opens May 12. This page will be updated each day of the festival.
The Cannes Film Festival red carpet is not the Met Gala. There is no theme, no dress code, no curatorial brief. The only rule is that there are no rules — except that the gown must reach the floor, the heel must be a certain height, and you must be prepared to walk an exceptionally long staircase in both.
What Cannes produces, year after year, is some of the most purely cinematic fashion photography in the world. The Palais des Festivals staircase, the Mediterranean light, the duration of the festival — twelve days, two to three red carpets per day — means that the Cannes carpet generates more fashion content than almost any other event on the calendar.
This is your tracker. We will update it daily from May 12 through May 23 with every look worth your attention.
What to Expect from Cannes 2026
The Films
The 2026 competition slate is heavy with filmmaker names that guarantee significant red carpet presence:
- Paolo Sorrentino returns with his new Italian epic, likely bringing Italian couture to the carpet in force
- Greta Gerwig is reportedly in competition — which means significant American and British talent on the Palais steps
- Hirokazu Kore-eda in competition brings Japanese fashion houses into the conversation
- A strong French contingent in Un Certain Regard means Parisian houses will be well represented
The jury president has not yet been announced. Jury composition typically signals which fashion houses get the most prominent placement — whoever dresses the jury president sets the tonal register for the whole festival.
The Fashion Houses That Own Cannes
Cannes has a different fashion hierarchy than the Met Gala. Here, the dominant names are:
Armani Privé — has dressed more Cannes red carpet appearances than any other couture house for the past fifteen years. Expect fluid column gowns in neutral tones.
Chopard — the official festival jeweler since 1998. Expect to see Chopard gems on nearly every major appearance.
L'Oréal Paris — official beauty partner and one of the largest celebrity delegations at the festival. Expect Eva Longoria (brand ambassador) to be a fixture.
Dior — increasingly dominant at Cannes under Maria Grazia Chiuri, particularly for French actresses and global talent.
Valentino — Alessandro Michele's theatrical sensibility plays extremely well on the Palais staircase.
The Red Carpet Aesthetic
Cannes favors a different register than New York or London award seasons. The Mediterranean setting rewards:
- Fluid, column silhouettes over structured sculptural forms
- Jewel tones — emerald, sapphire, deep red — that photograph against the blue sky and sea
- Couture construction worn with apparent ease rather than theatrical armor
- Old Hollywood glamour referenced rather than deconstructed
- Minimalism at the extreme end — the Cannes carpet consistently produces the year's best "one perfect dress" moments
The fashion that photographs best on the Palais staircase is fashion designed to be seen in motion, from below, in natural light. It is a fundamentally different brief than a museum carpet or a ceremony aisle.
Why Cannes Fashion Is Worth Following
The Met Gala is fashion as concept. The Oscars are fashion as industry. Cannes is fashion as film — and the distinction matters.
At Cannes, the red carpet exists in the context of cinema. The women and men walking it are there primarily because of their work on screen. The fashion is in conversation with the films, the roles, the directors, the industry moment. When Cate Blanchett wears Giorgio Armani on the Palais staircase, it is not separate from the fact that she is there for a film. It is part of the same statement.
This is also why Cannes consistently produces more purely beautiful fashion photography than any other event. The staircase, the light, the formality of the setting — it is a stage built for exactly this purpose, and the clothes that work best there are clothes that understand the stage.
We will be here for all twelve days of it.
