The classics never die — they just get refined. See how top stylists take the most familiar combination to new heights.
The Outfit That Never Actually Gets Old
I know what you're thinking. Denim and a white tee — really? We're doing this?
Yes. We're doing this. Because the denim-and-white-tee combination is the single most copied outfit in the history of street style, and the reason it gets copied endlessly is that it works every single time — when you do it right.
The problem is almost nobody does it right.
The Tee First
The white tee is doing more work than it looks. It needs to be the right weight — not thin enough to be transparent, not so thick it looks like athletic wear. It needs to fit across the shoulder and the chest without pulling. The length should hit somewhere between the hip bone and just below it.
Cotton-modal blends are my preference. They hold their shape, wash well, and have a subtle drape that cheap cotton
doesn't. Spend more here than you think you need to — the return on investment is enormous because you'll wear this thing
constantly.
The Denim Question
High-rise. Always, for this outfit. The tee needs somewhere to be tucked — or half-tucked — and low-rise denim eliminates that option. Straight leg or wide leg, both work. Raw hem or clean hem, both work. What doesn't work: anything cropped short, anything distressed beyond a subtle fade.
Wash matters too. Medium-dark indigo reads more elevated. Very light wash reads more casual. Both are valid but be intentional about which version you want.
The Third Piece
Here's where you actually elevate the combination. The third piece is the one that takes denim-and-a-tee from "I got dressed quickly" to "I know exactly what I'm doing."
- A blazer — the most reliable option, immediately adds polish
- A leather jacket — adds edge, changes the whole temperature of the look
- A silk scarf — tied at the neck or in the hair
- An excellent bag — let it be the statement
The Shoe Decision
The shoe will tell people everything about your intention for this outfit.
White trainers: casual, intentional, contemporary. Brown leather loafers: Parisian, slightly preppy, always right.
Pointed-toe flats: elongating, elegant, surprisingly versatile. Heeled mule: evening-ready, more dressed than it looks.
"The basics never go out of style because they were never really in style. They're just always right."
Pick your shoe before you pick your accessories. Everything else will follow.
