You know the woman who rolls into a farmers' market looking like she didn't try at all — but clearly did. I spent way too long studying that energy. I finally cracked the formula, and it's simpler than you'd think.
She Always Looks Like That
You know the one. She shows up to the farmers' market at 9am looking like she walked out of a very good editorial — and
you know, rationally, that she didn't try that hard. But you also know she definitely tried something.
I spent longer than I'm comfortable admitting trying to crack this. What I landed on is not complicated. But it is
specific.
The Formula
Three things. That's it. The Saturday morning outfit formula has three components, and every other element of the outfit is in service of those three.
One: A bottom with shape. Not necessarily a full silhouette — but something that has an intention. Wide-leg trousers. A linen midi skirt. Good jeans with the right fit. Something that, on its own, already looks like a decision was made.
Two: A top that fits properly. This is the one most people get wrong. The casual weekend top — the slightly-too-large t-shirt, the oversized everything — undercuts the bottom. What you want is something fitted across the shoulder with room to move. A proper white tee. A fine-gauge tank. A tucked-in shirt with one button open.
Three: One excellent thing. This is the piece that makes the formula. A bag that's genuinely interesting. A pair of
sunglasses that are clearly considered. Earrings that have a point of view. Shoes that you love. Pick one — just one —
and let it be the thing.
What You Take Away
The fourth thing that would have completed the outfit. This is the discipline part. The cardigan over the top, the extra
necklace, the belt you weren't sure about — leave it. The formula works because it's edited. Add one thing and you tip
from effortless into effortful, and everyone can feel the difference.
The Specific Saturday Outfit I Keep Coming Back To
Cream wide-leg linen trousers. White fitted tee, half-tucked on one side only. Tan leather loafers. One gold hoop earring (I always lose the second one anyway). Small woven bag.
Total decision time: under four minutes. Effect: like I've been dressing this way my whole life.
"Effortless is a skill. It just looks like luck."
